Hello Co-Op Owners,

Ahh, June is here, and that means summer has finally arrived! This month brings many celebrations, from the summer solstice and Juneteenth to Father’s Day and various patio events. We took advantage of the nice weather by firing up our grill for our smash burger event. Thank you to everyone who helped make that event a success!

Now it’s your turn to fire up the grill, enjoy the fresh flavors of summer, and reconnect with friends and loved ones you missed during winter. We have everything you need for your cookout: charcoal, locally made buns, fresh meat and produce, paper products, and desserts. Stop by to shop for a while and catch up with our staff—we love to hear from you!

New happenings:

Duck a Diet meals have been a success. If you haven’t heard already, we have new wraps from them, and they are super filling. All his products are made fresh, from the fillings to the condiments and toppings. If you are looking for a super clean meal that has great nutrition, I highly recommend you give their products a try.

Don’t worry if you can’t find your favorite bread among the packaged products. We have moved the Central IL Bakehouse to the front of the store for your convenience. As we update a few departments to make room for new offerings, some of your favorites may be temporarily misplaced. If you need assistance, an associate will always be happy to help you find what you’re looking for.

Dates to Remember

  • July 8th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Zentangle (SOLD OUT).
  • July 18th from 1:30 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. Introduction to Fused Glass workshop (SOLD OUT)
  • July 22nd from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feed the Birds, not the Squirrels

Our fused glass and Zentangle classes have been incredibly popular, often selling out within days of being announced. We’re working to schedule more classes throughout the summer as our talented instructors’ schedules allow.

Be sure to check the Events page on our website regularly and watch for our Weekly Beet newsletter every Wednesday to be among the first to hear about new classes and events. Many of these workshops fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged! https://foodshed.coop/events/

But these events are about much more than learning a new skill. One of the greatest things we cultivate at the Food Shed Co-op isn’t found on our shelves—it’s community. Every class, workshop, tasting, and patio gathering creates opportunities for neighbors to meet, learn something new, share a meal, and enjoy each other’s company. There’s something special about hearing laughter, watching strangers introduce themselves, exchanging ideas, and leaving as new friends. In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, these simple moments of genuine connection remind you to slow down and enjoy the community you know and love.

Our recent Smash Burger event and this past Saturday’s Grill & Chill barbecue were perfect examples. Families, friends, longtime owners, and first-time visitors gathered on our beautiful patio to enjoy delicious food, great conversation, and outstanding local music from Big Fish and Cassandra Vohs-Demann. The burgers and hot dogs were a hit, but it was the smiles, conversations, children playing, and neighbors connecting that made these events truly memorable.

At the Food Shed, we’re not just building a grocery store—we’re building a gathering place. A place where local businesses, food, music, artists and people come together. We hope you’ll join us at an upcoming class, workshop, or community event and experience that spirit for yourself.

Until we meet again,

Nathalie Gamboa (she/her)
