Wooden Nickel Program

Food Shed Co-op’s “In the Bag!” Wooden Nickel Program promotes the reuse of shopping bags and reusable containers by rewarding those customers who bring in their own bags (paper, cloth or plastic) or containers (for use in the Bulk Department) and by passing on the money saved to local charitable organizations. It’s a win for everyone!

When customers reuse shopping bags or containers at Food Shed Co-op, they get a wooden nickel for each one. The nickels are then donated through the co-op’s “In the Bag!” giving program. There are two acrylic boxes located at the front of the store designated for two specific local organizations (chosen on a quarterly basis). Customers deposit their wooden nickels into the box of their choice. At the end of each quarter, the nickels are counted and the charities receive a check for the collected amount, up to $250.

This Quarter's Non-Profits

Veterans Path to Hope is a dedicated organization serving veterans and their families in McHenry County through eight core programs designed to provide comprehensive support. Our services include assistance with stable housing, job placement, peer support, counseling, and nutritional assistance, ensuring veterans and their families receive the help they need at any stage of their journey. We employ a holistic approach, walking with veterans through every step of their transition and reintegration. Beyond our core programs, we offer an Outdoors Program that fosters camaraderie among veterans through therapeutic recreational activities like hikes, fishing trips, and unique outdoor experiences. All our programs are provided free of charge, whether a veteran is at risk of homelessness, seeking employment, or looking to reengage with their community and find a renewed sense of purpose.

We are a 17-year old pet rescue whose mission is to rescue abandoned, abused and neglected pets, provide veterinary care and find them loving homes. We strive to help families keep their pets and provide humane education to the community. Our rescued pets remain in our care until an appropriate home that meets their needs. A couple of pets were with us almost one year until that perfect home is found for them to live their best life.

Every three months Food Shed selects two new 501(c)3 non-profit organizations to be involved in our fundraising efforts. These are chosen from applicants that apply online here. The information gathered includes the following information:

● Name of organization
● 501(c)(3) Tax ID number
