What is local and why it matters
The 30 mile radius around our store’s location is shown within the orange circle on the map. Anything produced within this smallest circle and sold directly to Food Shed Co-op is considered hyper-local. The other purple circle around Woodstock marks the 150 mile radius that we consider local. Any producer within Illinois or the states bordering Illinois, that we have a direct purchasing relationship with, is considered regional.
Our mission is to be good stewards of our environment by supporting regenerative agriculture and sustainable business practices. One advantage of purchasing from local vendors is the opportunity it provides for us to really get to know our growers and producers. We can more easily meet with them in person, make visits to farms and production facilities and learn from them through classes and field trips. This promotes transparency and the ability to really know where our food comes from. Additionally, buying local keeps money local, which is great for our economy. Finally, by nurturing and supporting our local food system, we will provide more access to great, nutritious food and simultaneously reduce our negative impact on the environment by cutting down on the amount of fossil fuels burned in transporting goods.
