Choosing What We Can Strengthen

March 2026 – There are moments in the life of a cooperative when the word Co-op Owner becomes more than symbolic.

We are living in a time when much feels fast-moving and uncertain. Headlines change daily. Markets shift. Costs fluctuate. Many of the forces shaping our lives are beyond our influence.

A local food co-op is different.

Here, ownership is real. Decisions are local. The impact of participation is visible. What we choose to do together directly shapes what exists in our community.

But the cooperative experience is not just about governance or economics—it’s also about the everyday experience of food and community.

When you walk into the Food Shed Co-op, you find something increasingly rare: a grocery store that feels real. Easy parking. Friendly faces who often know your name if your a regular shopper. Fresh prepared foods made right here in our kitchen using wholesome ingredients. Soups simmering, meals ready for busy evenings, and local products from farmers and producers you may have met yourself.

This is food with a story. It is also a shopping experience that many people today are searching for—something authentic, rooted in community, and closer to home than the anonymous shelves of large chains.

In recent weeks, we have seen encouraging increases in sales and engagement, e.g., volunteering. That momentum matters and shows what is possible when owners lean in. At the same time, we are not yet at the sales levels required for long-term sustainability.

Our capital campaign remains open as a tool to strengthen our financial foundation. Participation to date has been modest relative to our ownership base, but the opportunity remains in front of us. The coming weeks are important.

If having a locally owned grocery in McHenry County matters to you, now is the time to act in ways that compound: consolidate more of your household shopping here, encourage a friend to become an owner, and, if you are able, consider participating in the capital campaign.

People will often drive across town to visit a farmers market because they want that feeling of connection—to the food, the farmers, and the community around them. The Food Shed Co-op offers that experience every day of every week rain or shine.

While we may not control the larger currents of the world, we can strengthen this place we call home.

That is the quiet power of cooperation.
